Hair Transplant involves extraction of healthy hair follicles from the back or sides of your scalp (or any other part of your body), and implanting them onto the bald areas of your scalp or body. These transplanted hairs take root and grow continuously throughout the patient’s lifetime.

A Graft is a unit of hairs. Each graft contains anywhere between one to four hair follicles.

Asking your Doctors & Surgeons anything about your treatment procedures & conditions is always better for both ways. In fact, it will make much easier for doctors to give the right advice to their patients. And so will be your clarity.

You can also ask:

  • Your Doctor’s experience
  • The types of Hair Transplant techniques
  • Before & After results of previous clients
  • Duration of hair Transplant Sessions
  • Total cost for the procedure

Our hair transplant doctor will first examine your hair and scalp before recommending any procedure. You will have to present your prior medical records, and inform about any family history related to hair loss problems.

The ideal candidates for Hair Transplant are those men in their late 20s upto 60+ as well, provided their vitals are properly investigated. For those who are in their early 20s need proper counselling as baldness & future paternities of hair loss is not yet established; and hair transplant will not be a wise solution.

The first and most significant step to follow before Hair Transplant is to make regular consultation with your doctor to identify the underlying cause of Hair Loss. Many times, medications, stress and treatable illnesses can cause hair thinning. So assuming that a hair transplant could be the only solution would not be accurate. Patients with hypertension or diabetes need careful counselling. Also, people who suffer hair loss at an early age need not rush for a hair transplant as hair loss pattern needs time to mature. Otherwise, the transplanted hairs will look unnatural as hair loss still continuous.

If all these aspects are clear to the clients they are good to go ahead with the hair transplant procedures.

A hair transplant is done by extracting healthy hair follicles from the back or side of the patient’s head, beard or chest and is transplanted to the balding areas of the head. Transplanted hair is genetically resistant to baldness. If the transplant is done properly the new hair will last long. Hence, when these hair follicles are transplanted to the bald areas they do not lose their character and, usually survive for most of your life.

The clients should be able to style their hair to their liking after a year. After a transplant surgery the hair grows slowly and by a year it is completely grown. The hair grows normally and can be styled freely with products that are used for styling, such as sprays, gels, and mousses. The hair can also be dyed to give it a new look. Blow drying can add volume and body to the hair. Proper styling and grooming of the hair after a hair transplant is very important as this will help the person’s personality to gain confidence.

Excessive intake of alcohol can interfere with certain medications or lead to unwanted complications, such as bleeding, during or after a hair transplant. It is often advised that clients should avoid or may be completely stop drinking, smoking and consumption of certain herbs and medications they are generally used to, for a few weeks before the transplant surgery. Smoking should be avoided a couple of weeks prior to the surgery as it gives negative effect on hair transplant.

The procedure takes approximately 6-8 hours for a typical 1,500-3,000 grafts, depending on the size of the area being transplanted. Following a brief rest, you are ready to leave the office.

Usually, within the first 3 months, the client can expect to see new hair growing. Between 6 months and 1 year, the client will see significant changes. The hair will be longer, thicker and denser in volume than before. While it may take a while for the hair to grow completely, the hair that is growing is permanent and will continue growing for a lifetime.

Since the hair follicles that are transplanted to the balding areas are taken from genetically resistant areas to going bald, they grow for the rest of the life.

Hair Transplant Surgery is usually performed under a local anaesthesia, which numbs the surgical sites during the procedure. This helps in avoiding any pain sensation during the surgery. However, you might have little pain after the surgery which is manageable. The hair transplant doctor will also give you certain pain medication to reduce if it is too much.

It depends on the technique, area of baldness and the number of grafts required.

Hair transplantations are classified as:

  • Small sessions: up to 1300 grafts. These take about 3.5 hours.
  • Medium sessions: 1300-2000 grafts. These last about 4 to 5 hours
  • Large or mega sessions: more than 2000 grafts per session. These last longer; from 5-6 hours

Our team at Dadu Medical Centre is capable of grafting up to 3000-3500 grafts in one session.

Hair transplant results can last for lifetime. But it depends upon the various factors like if you have balding (alopecia) running genetically in your family, and you’ve got a transplant done at an early age, you are likely to lose the existing hair, but not the transplanted hair. However, if you follow the hair transplant doctor’s instructions and take the right precautions on time, the results will be healthy.

If you go for an FUT hair transplant, you are bound to have a linear scar hidden under the denser hair on the back of your scalp. An FUE hair transplant has tiny spot like scars which eventually become invisible and hidden.

A hair transplant is evident mostly because of the unnatural appearance. It depends on how well the hair transplant surgeon has designed the hairline and how well the procedure is performed.

The downtime depends on what type of surgery you choose. If you have got an FUE hair transplant done, the recovery will be upto a week with minimal activity restrictions. You can see the new hair growth within 3-5 months. In an FUT procedure, you will have to wait for at least a day or two for complete recovery from the soreness or inflammation due to the operation. Other treatment techniques like laser combs do not need any down time, whereas, a therapy involves injecting the Pla-te-let Rich Plasma into the balding areas which might cause slight inflammation which reduces within 5-6 hours.

After a hair transplant surgery, the scalp turns a little pinkish with the micro incisions which make it look evident. However, most people get comfortable being in public without covering the head within 5 to 7 days. Once the transplanted hair grows back it looks natural even on close examination.

Yes, The transplanted hair is extracted from back of the scalp (donor site), which is genetically resistant to hair loss and transferred to bald site (recipient site). The transplanted follicles are not “rejected” as they are not foreign tissue. The newly grown hair maintains it’s own characteristics; colour, texture, growth rate, and curl, after transplantation and re-growth. The vitality of the grafted follicle is maintained by the rich blood supply to the scalp.

There is no non-surgical method for Hair Transplant.

Hair weaving is a temporary cosmetic method for hair treatment. In this, a wig is prepared and fixed on to the scalp with pins and clips. The weaving does not have to be removed.

Honestly speaking, Hair weaving is a temporary method for those who can’t opt for a Hair Transplant. The expenditure for maintenance exceeds more than its efficiency. Frequent loosening of the pins & clips and the constant need to fix causes more inconvenient.

Women are increasingly having hair transplant operations and can undergo the procedure.

With latest updates in instruments & techniques truly natural results can be achieved by transplanting small grafts very close together. It has been found that hair grows from scalp in groups of one, two, and three hair follicles – called follicular or hair units. These hair units are transplanted resulting in a denser and more natural result.

The procedure is relatively simple and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients can go home the same day-no admission is necessary.

The complications associated with hair transplant surgery are extremely rare and the procedure very safe. Remember: This is an operation in skin only. A mild analgesics & antibiotics will be administered to prevent pain and infection. Mild swelling of forehead may be noticed after the surgery, which can be easily controlled with ice packs or anti-inflammatory drugs.

Allergy to local anaesthetic, infection of operated site, delayed healing, delayed hair growth can happen rarely. Pustules (small boils or pimples) may occur in the second month and represent reaction to hair; they do not represent infection. They are self limiting and subside with in 2-4 weeks

During surgery, diluted aesthetic solution is injected into the donor site for anaesthesia and to minimise bleeding. The water in the solution may descend down due to gravity and result in swelling on 2-3rd post-operative day. However, this is mild, temporary (lasting ~2 days) and can be prevented by using a tight plaster on forehead. It is easily treated by the use of ice compresses or steroids orally.

The number of sessions will depend on:

  • The area of scalp treated,
  • The number and size of grafts used,
  • The density which the patient desires,
  • The individual characteristics of the patient, e.g. coarse hair will provide a more dense look than fine hair.

It should be clearly understood that hair transplantation gives you new hair in a bald area, but it can not prevent future loss of existing hair. Hence, if the patient has significant hair remaining at the time of surgery, he will need to use drugs to prevent further hair loss. Alternatively, he may undergo a second hair transplantation if he loses further hair.

It can be done any time after about 6 months – 1 year. This is the time required for the door scar to heal and the results of the first surgery to be seen.

Typically the grafted hair will shed in the initial 2-4 weeks. New growth will begin in 3-4 months and length will increase approximately 1/2 inch per month. A full cosmetic result can be expected in 9-10 months.

Little pain is experienced during the procedure. Some discomfort is to be expected as the anaesthetic is injected into the scalp. Once the skin is anaesthetized, there is no pain.

We also minimise the pain of injection by using sodium bicarbonate, vibrators, EMLA cream etc.

You can enjoy listening music during the surgery.

No, not necessary. You need to come for only one day- the next day. Thereafter you can travel. All further care can be done personally at home and we are available on emails for any clarification.

The dressing is a small piece of gauze which can be easily hidden with a baseball cap. Even this is removed the very next day and you may return to work the very next day!!! However, it is preferable to rest for two days if there is any pain or mild swelling of forehead.

Yes, you can provided you understand the facts. Transplant is always done only in between existing hairs, not on top of existing hairs. They replace only lost hairs, not hairs which may be lost in future. So, you need to take medicine, so you can retain existing hairs and prevent them from being lost.

It is not necessary. You need to be available at the clinic only for four hours. You are discharged the same day and can attend work next day.

Yes we need to shave off prior to surgery. In case a very small area or only hairline need to be created , we can go without head shave in frontal areas but donor area needs to be shave off any how to pick grafts.

Heavy exercises should be avoided in the first 2 weeks.

We should avoid Swimming for a 1 month at least after hair Transplant

The normal density given by nature is about 80-100 units/sq cms. Since the donor area is limited and therefore donor hairs are also limited, it is not possible to give this density in bald area in transplantation. It has also been shown that a density of 40-50 is optimal for good growth and also gives good cosmetic look. So generally this is the density which is planned.

However, a higher density can be given if a patient desires, subject to the following issues:

  • The more the density, lesser is the survival of grafts
  • The more number of hairs you use in one transplant, the less you have for future transplants.
  • Of course, cost goes up as more grafts are transplanted.

It is wrongly assumed by many people that short hair does not fall and long hairs fall more. This is wrong. It is always preferable to leave long hairs as it length adds to volume and therefore looks better.
