For most people dealing with hair loss, the scalp donor area is enough. But not always. In advanced baldness or scarring alopecia cases, the back and sides of the scalp simply don't have enough healthy follicles left to work with. That's where body hair transplant comes in. BHT is a permanent hair restoration procedure where follicles are taken from other parts of the body, beard, chest, stomach, legs, armpits and implanted into bald or thinning areas of the scalp. BHT isn't a straightforward extension of standard hair transplant surgery. Body hair differs from scalp hair in texture, growth cycle, and density and blending the two well requires a specific level of surgical experience.

One thing patients are always told upfront: the success rate for BHT is 75–80%, which is lower than scalp-to-scalp FUE (around 95%). Before Treatment

  • If you're on blood thinners, aspirin, or any anti-inflammatory medication, stop at least a week before the procedure. Your doctor will confirm the exact timeline during your consultation.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 3–5 days before your appointment. It affects bleeding and that directly impacts how cleanly the extraction goes.
  • Stop smoking at least a week prior. Blood flow to both the donor body area and the recipient site needs to be unrestricted for grafts to survive the transfer.
  • Shave or trim the donor area whether that's the chest, beard, or legs a day or two before. Your doctor will advise the exact length needed for extraction.
  • On the day itself, shower and come in with clean skin. No moisturiser, no body lotion, nothing applied to the donor or recipient area.
  • Eat before you arrive. Body hair transplants run several hours depending on graft count and you shouldn't be sitting through that on an empty stomach.

After Treatment

  • Don't touch or scratch either the donor body area or the recipient scalp zone for the first 72 hours. Both sites are healing simultaneously and need to be left alone.
  • Some redness and minor scabbing at the donor site is normal chest, legs, or beard area depending on where grafts were taken from. It settles on its own.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first few nights to manage any swelling around the forehead or recipient area.
  • Hold off washing for the first 48 hours. After that, your doctor will give you specific instructions for cleaning both sites without disrupting graft placement.
  • Avoid sun exposure on both the donor and recipient areas for at least two weeks. Body skin used as a donor site can be just as sensitive post-extraction.
  • Strenuous activity, swimming, and anything that causes heavy sweating should be avoided for a minimum of 10–14 days.
  • Body hair grafts can take longer to show visible growth compared to scalp-to-scalp transplants this is normal given the difference in hair cycles. Patience with the timeline is part of the process.
